Somerset Scientific Services Origins

Somerset County Council appointed their first Public Analyst in 1875. The role was originally to ensure the safety of drinking water in the county. Somerset Scientific Services grew from this vital public service. It eventually moving into laboratory space in County Hall in 1935. The team have built on those years of experience and now specialise in a range of water, environmental, workplace and asbestos testing.

Scientific Testing & Monitoring 

Our services are available to the general public, businesses and the public sector. From testing private water supplies and monitoring air quality to conducting extensive asbestos surveys, our staff offer trusted independent expertise and specialist advice.

Our Somerset Laboratory

Our Westpark laboratory was purpose built in 2016. It offers state of the art UKAS accredited testing laboratory No 0369 in the heart of the West Country. Situated just off junction 26 on the M5, we are ideally situated to provide services both locally  and across the South West. Our local patch covers Somerset, Devon, Bristol, South Gloucestershire and West Dorset. We provide some of our services from Cornwall to the Midlands, and even overseas.



UKAS Accredited Testing & Monitoring

Somerset Scientific Services are a UKAS accredited testing laboratory No. 0369 and inspection body No.338. This provides our clients with the utmost confidence in the quality of our services. Annual inspections ensure that from sample receipt through to reporting there is an auditable quality trail. UKAS is the sole national accreditation body in the UK and is recognised by the Government to assess testing laboratories and inspection bodies against internationally agreed standards. We also participate in external and internal quality control schemes to maintain our high standards
