About Somerset Scientific Services
The first Public Analyst was appointed by Somerset County Council in 1875, originally to ensure the safety of drinking water in the county. Somerset Scientific Services grew from this vital public service, eventually moving into laboratory space in County Hall in 1935. The team have built on those years of experience and now specialise in a range of water, environmental, workplace and asbestos testing.
Our services are available to the general public, businesses and the public sector. From testing private water supplies and monitoring air quality to conducting asbestos surveys and providing COSHH checks, our staff offer trusted independent expertise and specialist advice.
Our Westpark laboratory was purpose built in 2016 and offers state of the art UKAS accredited testing and analysis in the heart of the West Country. Situated just off junction 26 on the M5, we are ideally situated to provide services both locally and across the South West.
As a public service, we are always happy to provide guidance and impartial advice. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the team if you have any queries or concerns relating to our specialisms.
Somerset Scientific Services are accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) for water and asbestos services, affording our clients the utmost confidence in the quality of our services. Annual inspections ensure that from initial advice through to sample receipt and reporting there is an auditable quality trail. UKAS is the sole national accreditation body recognised by the Government to assess laboratories against internationally agreed standards. We also participate in external and internal quality control schemes to maintain our high standards.
