Here at Somerset Scientific Services, we are supporting the HSE campaign to Go Home Healthy. They are urging employers and employees alike to look after their health.

Breathing in dust, gases, vapours and fumes at work can cause life-changing lung disease or make existing conditions worse. Twelve thousand workers die each year from lung diseases such as COPD, work-related asthma and lung cancer, pneumoconiosis, silicosis, and 20 tradespeople a week are still dying from asbestos-related illnesses like mesothelioma and asbestosis, according to HSE figures        .

Know The Regulations – And Follow Them

Regulations are in place to protect workers, but it’s vital to be aware of them and ensure they are being followed. Something as simple as regular maintenance and monitoring of your LEV system or fume cupboard can have a huge impact on the health and wellbeing of your staff. If you notice a pattern of illness and staff absence, consider getting your indoor air quality tested. We especially urge all trades to be asbestos-aware when working on pre-2000 properties, and to always seek professional advice to identify and safely handle hazardous materials.
